A Technique for Teaching the Laryngectomized to Trap Air for the Production of Esophageal Speech

Abstract

A four-step procedure for injecting air into the esophagus is described. The method involves opening the mouth wide, closing the lips with little or no elevation of the mandible, puckering the lips, and then bringing the teeth together. If the sequence is properly executed and air has not escaped through the labial or velar seals, air is forced in the esophagus and is available for the production of an esophageal tone.
